Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My loved one had an autopsy or toxicology screening. When will the results be available?
A: A forensic autopsy procedure is a comprehensive examination. The process and the associated testing that is completed are time-consuming. Final report(s) are usually available 3-6 weeks after the procedure(s)
Q: What if we want an autopsy performed, but the Coroner’s Office decides one is not necessary for their investigation?
A: If the Coroner’s Office declines to do an autopsy, the decedent’s legal next-of-kin can privately hire a pathologist to perform an autopsy. State statute states that the party requesting the autopsy is responsible for payment. Costs range from about $2500 to $5000 for a private autopsy. Embalming should be delayed until after the autopsy is performed.
Q: How do I obtain a death certificate?
A: The Funeral Director at the Funeral Home you select will assist you with this. The Indiana Death Registration System is electronic and as the investigation progresses, the electronic form generated by the Funeral Home is forwarded to the appropriate authority for sign off. Certificates are then typically released to you at the funeral home.
Q: My loved one had property with them when they died. How do I receive those items?
A: In most circumstances, all property, including but not limited to clothing, jewelry, and belongings that were in your loved one's possession are documented and typically remain with the body to be released to the funeral home. If our office has seized any property, you will be informed.
Q: Where is my loved one's body being taken?
A: If the Coroner handling the death investigation deems that an autopsy or toxicology test be performed, the Hancock County Coroner’s Office will take custody of your loved one until investigative procedures are complete. This is usually a couple of days. These procedures are at no cost to the family and procedures take place at a secure facility in Greenfield. Afterward, your loved one can be released to a funeral home of your family’s choosing.
Q: Can I come to your office to view my loved one?
A: Unfortunately, our facility is not equipped to allow families to view loved ones. You will have the opportunity to view your loved one once they have been transferred to a funeral home.
Q: What funeral home should I use?
A: For your convenience, we have provided a transparent list of all funeral homes within Hancock County that families often utilize. You do not have to use a funeral home in Hancock Co. if you prefer another establishment outside of the county.
